The Path to Becoming a Lawyer in India

To practice as an advocate in India, you must: (1) complete a recognized law degree, (2) enroll with a State Bar Council, and (3) pass the All India Bar Examination (AIBE). Here's the complete roadmap.

Step 1: Choose Your Law Course

  • 5-Year Integrated BA LLB/BBA LLB: After Class 12. Entrance through CLAT, LSAT, or university-specific exams. This is the most common path.
  • 3-Year LLB: After graduation in any discipline. Entrance through various university exams.

Step 2: Complete Your Law Degree

Study core subjects: Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Civil Procedure, Contracts, Torts, Evidence, Property Law, Family Law, etc. Participate in moot courts, internships, and legal aid clinics for practical experience.

Step 3: Enroll with Bar Council

After graduation, enroll with the State Bar Council (e.g., Bar Council of West Bengal for Kolkata lawyers). Submit your degree certificate, character certificate, and enrollment fee.

Step 4: Pass the AIBE

The All India Bar Examination is conducted by the Bar Council of India. It tests basic legal knowledge and professional ethics. Passing the AIBE is mandatory to receive the Certificate of Practice.

FAQs

Can I practice in court immediately after LLB?
You can start practicing under a senior advocate immediately after enrollment with the Bar Council, even before passing the AIBE. However, you get your full Certificate of Practice only after passing the AIBE.
